A lot of things sound like foot steps but if they go on and on for hours no matter what there s a good chance that noise is something else. Mice or rats are your likely culprit. I ve occasionally woken up to what i thought were foot step. I should also mention racoons birds and other animals make the same sound.

Ever since the building was reroofed about four years ago i ve heard knock like sounds mostly at night. Occasionally when the house is very quiet you will hear them during the day as well.
