Half Gable Shed Roof

A gable roof is probably the most versatile type of shed roof and the most common as it can handle any type of pitch.

The opposite arrangement to the half hipped roof. 2 6 or greater planks span the distance between the high wall and the low wall often with an overhang. And the line length measurement from the roof peak to the building wall is the hypotenuse. The run or half the building span is the base of the triangle.

Whereas a hip roof and other popular roof types have at least two sides the shed roof has a single slope that can vary in steepness depending on the design. A skillion or shed style roof shed has one wall higher than the opposite wall creating a single slope roof. Putting it together is relatively straight forward if you have basic carpentry skills and use precise measurements. As a variation of gable it has the same benefits and drawbacks though is slightly more in overall cost to account for the slight change to the frame.

Gable style shed roof. As pictured above the result is a hip roof that clips the gable face by half. You can also think of it as one half of a traditional gable roof. From the outside it looks a lot like one half of the standard gable style roof.

A gable style is the easiest to build but offers very little storage in the attic. Then you will have more storage. Now we can measure exactly what the measurements will be for your gable shed roof rafter or truss half that will span your shed exactly 12 and give you an inside height of 5 from your top plate to the inside of the top of the truss pieces. Unless of course you have a very steep pitch on your trusses or rafters.

To build your gable roof you ll need wooden boards cut into joists rafters supports and a ridge board in addition to sheathing felt paper and shingles. It is one of the easiest roofs to build and usually the least expensive. The framing of a basic gable roof is based on a right angle triangle and the various roof framing components fit the triangle. A gable roof has the same pitch on each side as well as the same length.

A saltbox shed is a gable that extends further incorporating a covered porch on the front or back. The rise or height of the roof at its peak is the altitude of the triangle. A lean to is also versatile but features only one roof.
